It is such a cute idea and I am definitely going to be making a bunch of these as a Christmas (I can't believe it's November already) treat for my kids at school. I also love that it is a healthy treat and is peanut allergy friendly.
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-73371322615187511402013-11-03T16:14:00.001-08:002013-11-03T16:19:23.232-08:00The books that ended my long reading slumpI have had quite the reading (and writing) slump for the last few months. I would start books and either they would take me way too long to complete or I'd never even bother to finish the book. As a book lover, I rarely ever start a book and not finish it. About a week ago my friend and I decided to try and have our own mini book club. We picked out a series and decide we would read it together. Although I found this to be a great idea, I didn't know whether or not it would pull me out of my reading funk. We must have chosen the right book because I devoured the first two in the series in a few days and I am almost done the third and final book in the trilogy. So what are these wonderful books that got me back into my reading?

The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier. I don't want to say too too much about this series to prevent spoilers but I will post the synopsis for the first book. These books were originally written in German and then translated into English. The translation is wonderfully done and the words and sentences flow beautifully. There are some books that as I am reading I am conscious of what page I'm on and how many pages are left. I didn't notice the pages or time fly by as I read these books. I was completely engaged by the characters, dialogue and setting. I highly recommend this series.

Synopsis: Gwyneth Shepherd's sophisticated, beautiful cousin Charlotte has been prepared her entire life for traveling through time. But unexpectedly, it is Gwyneth who in the middle of class takes a sudden spin to a different era!
Gwyneth must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon—the time traveler from a similarly gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whose presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential.

Together, Gwyneth and Gideon journey through time to discover who, in the 18th century and in contemporary London, they can trust.

Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-61204595302503263752013-09-15T18:48:00.001-07:002013-09-15T18:48:22.394-07:00A pretty necklace

I got this necklace from NYC a few weeks ago and love its simplicity.
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-54523408325553218652013-07-31T14:57:00.001-07:002013-07-31T14:57:57.822-07:00Coloured ArtI love to draw, especially portraits. With my Netflix I have been able to catch up on shows I've missed and discover new ones. After marathoning through Pretty Little Liars I was on the search for something different. I came across Melissa & Joey and instantly fell in love. I loved Melissa Joan Hart in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and I remember watching Joey Lawrence on Brotherly Love. It brought back memories and made me smile. These two are great together and the show is quite funny. I would call this show a modern-day Who's The Boss.
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-38025935412231021282013-07-13T18:48:00.001-07:002013-07-13T18:48:25.393-07:00Gorgeous

I kinda want to live here.
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-1726722834560758742013-07-12T20:01:00.001-07:002013-07-12T20:01:33.704-07:00Bookish tea

I love tea and I love books so why not combine them? Cat grooming tool

I have two cats (pictured above). The darker one is named Emmy and the lighter one is Lily (and yes, they do actually sit like that. I did not make them pose). Lily has extremely long hair that sheds all the time! Being an indoor cat, she sheds most of the year. Her fur is all over the place. It sticks to my clothes, my furniture, the counters, books...Today I heard about a cat grooming tool that is supposed to help with shedding. I was a bit skeptical because it looks similar to any other grooming brush you'd use on a cat but I was shocked at how amazing this little thing is.

This brush is called the Furminator and comes in a couple of sizes. There are small and large brushes and you can choose between the long hair and short hair version. I got the small long hair brush and tried it out today. It is very easy to use. There is a little button at the back of the brush which releases the fur captured. I was so shocked by how much fur came out. What this brush does is allow the loose fur from the undercoat to be removed, something that a normal brush cannot do. It claims to reduce shedding by 90%. This is also great for those nasty hair balls that cats get from grooming themselves. So far I am quite impressed and would recommend this for any long haired cat owner.
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-27976764035173181182013-07-11T17:55:00.001-07:002013-07-11T17:55:33.804-07:00A Healthy Snack

If you're looking for a healthy and tasty snack you need to try Brad's Raw Leafy Kale. Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach

This is truly a great book. I have always been interested in some of the Buddhist teachings and came across this book last week. It has gotten great reviews and I am truly enjoying reading it. It definitely makes you look at the world in a different way.
Tara Brach also has a ton of Poscasts that you can listen to. She's such a great speaker with some wonderful ideas.

Synopsis: For many of us, feelings of deficiency are right around the corner. It doesn’t take much--just hearing of someone else’s accomplishments, being criticized, getting into an argument, making a mistake at work--to make us feel that we are not okay. Beginning to understand how our lives have become ensnared in this trance of unworthiness is our first step toward reconnecting with who we really are and what it means to live fully.
Today I was at my parents' place and was sorting through some of the stuff I left behind in my old bedroom and I found my Gameboy Advance and some of my games. I used to love this little thing and it brings back so many memories. Tetris was always so much fun to play before the touch screen versions came along. I'm looking forward to catching up with some of these games.
Cleaning/sorting can be a lot of fun especially when you find stuff you forgot you had.
I was looking to attach a keyboard to my iPad because I often type and blog on the go. Last week, the USB charging port on that keyboard broke. So I was once again on the search for a new keyboard. I had heard great things about the Logitech one but was not ready to spend the $100 the first time I picked out a keyboard cover. In hindsight, if I had spent the extra $30 in the beginning, it would have cost me a lot less in the end.

Yesterday I stopped at Best Buy and picked up the purple keyboard (it comes in white, black and purple). It is very thin and quite easy to set up. The hinge on the back is magnetic and puts the iPad to sleep when the cover is closed (like the iPad Smart Cover). A third of the way down the keyboard there is a groove where you place the keyboard when you want to type. This groove is magnetic as well and allows the keyboard to stay in place while you type. So far I find that it works quite well and my iPad has not slipped out. When it is propped in typing mode, you get a 60 degree viewing angle which is quite comfortable for both typing on a table or on your lap. I have only had the chance to use this keyboard for a day but I have done quite a lot of typing with it. They keyboard feels quite sturdy and is very responsive. The only thing I have heard people complain about is the fact that it needs to be pulled off its hinge each time it is used. I don't find that to be an issue. In fact, I find that it allows for this case to be quite thin and easy to carry around. It looks quite stylish when the cover is closed. Logitech has matched their outer cover to the brushed silver backing of the iPad. This gives it the look of a mini MacBook Air. I am really hoping that this keyboard lasts a little longer than the other one. So far I am impressed.
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-86403955200414670592013-06-29T06:41:00.001-07:002013-07-10T17:42:16.355-07:00It's officially summer vacation!

Yesterday was my last day of work. It still hasn't sunk in that I have 2 months off. It always takes me a few days to adjust to not having to work. It was definitely a bittersweet ending to the school year. I was surplused at the school I've been teaching at for two years and was moved to a new school. The upside to this move is that I am now full-time. I consider myself extremely lucky to have a full-time permanent teaching job because I know that it is extremely hard to find work as a teacher, especially with the new hiring process. My last day at my school was full of tears. The thing that hurts the most is leaving all the kids behind. There are so many of them that I am not done with. Some of them I can tell I was getting through to...I just needed a bit more time. I don't deal well with change. I hate it. I am trying to adjust to this move and have to be grateful that I do have a job next year.

On a more positive note, you can expect a lot more posts from me this summer as I have a lot of ideas for this blog. I spent a week off work on sick leave and was looking for something light and fun to read. What better books than Jen Lancaster's hilarious memoirs. This week I am reading Pretty in Plaid. She has 7 books in her series of memoirs. I'm on her 4th and each one has not yet disappointed me.
I'd been debating making this purchase for the last week or so. After reading many articles and watching quite a few review videos, I decided to go for it.

So what does this bracelet do exactly? It tracks your steps during the day as well as your sleep and sleep quality. I was most intrigued about the sleep portion. It gives you stats on how long it took you to sleep, how many hours of deep sleep vs light sleep you got. Here is an example of my Sunday night sleep pattern:

So far I am really loving this bracelet and have found that it is motivating me to get up and walk more often. You can set step goals for each day and add friends to your account for encouragement (or competitive) purposes.

Some other cool features:

- The app has a bar code scanner so you can scan different foods you've eaten throughout the day. This then provides you with all the nutritional information and calories
- You can set smart alarms that will wake you up at the best time according to your sleep pattern and sleep goal
- There is an idle alarm that goes off if you've been sitting still for too long

I'm still discovering the app and its features but so far I am enjoying this little gizmo and highly recommend it.
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-18720313839601744762013-04-28T20:25:00.001-07:002013-04-29T16:45:41.856-07:00Beauty Tip: Crayon Lipstick

I was watching The Doctors yesterday. The topic was bout making cheap homemade beauty products with everyday ingredients as an alternative to the expensive store bought ones. By making many of these products at home, many of the chemicals that are in most of the skincare/makeup products are eliminated. I really loved the segment on crayon lipstick and will be trying it out very soon.

I picked up this case for my iPad today because my Apple Smart Cover was nearly destroyed. My intention was to pick up another Smart Cover/Case but for 54$, I figured I could get something more functional. That is when I came across the Verbatim Slim Folio Keyboard case. At 69$, it is not only a full case, but it has a bluetooth keyboard built in. So far I am loving it! I am actually using it right now to write this post on my iPad.

Click here to see some of its cool features!

Some things that I found unique about this particular keyboard case (there are many out there):

- the keyboard is held in by magnets and is easy to remove so that you can either type more comfortably or remove some of the bulk from the case when traveling
- the plastic grips that hold the iPad in place swivel so that you can view the iPad in both landscape and portrait mode when typing.
- the keyboard has quite a few neat shortcut buttons (screen lock, zoom, closing window, copy and paste), which makes it quick to do those simple frequently used tasks
- the case is quite stylish. It has a magnetic enclosure on the outside which keeps everything secure. As far as I know, it comes in black and gray (I have the gray one)Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-76721421684160626612013-04-27T09:37:00.001-07:002013-04-29T16:49:13.701-07:00Cannot stop watching this.

Each year you are able to set a goal of how many books you'd like to read and as you read them, it tracks your progress telling you whether you're on track or not. After having completed some reading challenges and signing up for this year's challenge, I all of a sudden decided that these challenges were taking the fun out of reading. For me, reading is about getting lost in a good story. It's about escaping from the daily stresses and entering into a new world. I lost sight of that. My goal was to try to reach that magical number that I had set at the beginning of the year. I would pick books that were shorter so I could finish them quickly. And all of a sudden I found that reading didn't have that same appeal that it used to because I was too focused on challenging myself to read more and to read quicker. This may be what caused my reading slump. So I took down my reading challenge and have decided that I am going to read at my own pace and enjoy each story I pick up.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7364002750873549224.post-32888053976016293462013-03-23T20:56:00.001-07:002013-04-29T16:47:23.703-07:00Reading Slumps SuckI have been in a reading slump since the beginning of the year and I cannot seem to shake it. It's not like I've been trying to read boring books. I just can't seem to sit down and read a book for long enough to finish it. I get restless half way through the book and want to start something new. There hasn't been a book to truly catch my attention this year...until now. I have always loved fairy tales so when I saw this book I just HAD to have it. And I cannot wait to dive in! Maybe this will finally be the book that breaks me out of my reading slump.
I am finally getting back into the swing of things after two weeks off. Is it just me or did everyone get really sick during the holidays? I was out for almost my whole time off and I am still not back to feeling 100%.

There will be a few changes to the blog this year. I am not going to have a schedule for my posts this year. I found it a little too constraining and there were certain days that I just tended not to post because I had nothing to say about that "topic of the day". So this year will be a little more random but will be focused on books, food and my artwork. I have added a couple of pages at the top of this blog where you can see what books I am reading this year. You will also be able to see my artwork as I complete each piece. After a couple of years of absolutely no drawing, I am finally getting back into it...slowly but surely and am enjoying it very much.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18389841813316534204noreply@blogger.com0
